CRITICAL CARE & STEP DOWN
UNIT
(Intermediate Care)
An 18-bed multidisciplinary unit with the capability to provide
care for patients who require a more highly acute level of medical
or nursing treatment and/or monitoring. Critical Care Services
is staffed by nurses who are ACLS certified and receive specialized
training in the care of critically ill patients. All beds in
the CCU/SDU are private rooms, offering our patients the most
in comfort and privacy during the course of their illness and
treatment.
Treatment is provided for, but not limited to, unstable patients
in need of life-saving intensive treatment such as ventilator
support, vasoactive medications, aggressive volume rescucitation,
severe acute medical illness or with a potential risk for complications
after major surgery.
Procedures include continuous hemodynamic monitoring using state-of-the
art equipment, thrombolytic treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarctions,
mechanical ventilation, post-operative care of unstable patients,
pressure monitoring, cardioversion, and intra-aortic balloon
pumping.
Intermediate care provides a higher nurse-patient ratio than
the general medical-surgical areas for more frequent observation
which provides a transition from Critical Care to the General
Medical/Surgical Care areas. This area specializes in cardiac
and cardiac-related diseases with on-unit heart monitoring and
invasive line capability.
Pediatric patients, ages 6 to 16 are provided care in coordination
with the nursing staff of the Pediatric Department to help meet
the special age-related needs of this patient group.
The Critical Care Services Nursing Staff, working collaboratively
with our Medical Staff and Ancillary Support Services is committed
to providing the highest quality services to the community that
we serve.
